Rings in the Planetesimal Disk of β Pic
نویسندگان
چکیده
The nearby main sequence star β Pic is surrounded by an edge-on disk of dust produced by the collisional erosion of larger planetesimals. Here we report the discovery of substructure within the northeast extension of the disk midplane that may represent an asymmetric ring system around β Pic. We present a dynamical model showing that a close stellar flyby with a quiescient disk of planetesimals can create such rings, along with previously unexplained disk asymmetries. Thus we infer that β Pic’s planetesimal disk was highly disrupted by a stellar encounter in the last hundred thousand years. Stellar Encounters with the β Pictoris Planetesimal System
We use data from the Hipparcos catalog and the Barbier-Brossat & Figon (2000) catalog of stellar radial velocities to test the hypothesis that the β Pic planetesimal disk was disrupted by a close stellar encounter. We trace the space motions of 21,497 stars and discover 18 that have passed within 5 pc of β Pic in the past 1 Myr. β Pic’s closest encounter is with the K2III star HIP 27628 (∼0.6 p...

We use a multiannulus planetesimal accretion code to investigate the growth of icy planets in the outer regions of a planetesimal disk. In a quiescent minimum mass solar nebula, icy planets grow to sizes of 1000–3000 km on a timescale tP ≈ 15 − 20 Myr (a/30 AU), where a is the distance from the central star. Planets form faster in more massive nebulae. Newly-formed planets stir up leftover plan...
متن کاملFirst Two-micron Imaging Polarimetry of Beta Pictoris
High-resolution K band imaging polarimetry of the β Pic dust disk has been conducted with adaptive optics and a coronagraph using the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. Polarization of ∼10 % is detected out to r ∼ 120 AU with a centrosymmetric vector pattern around the central star, confirming that the disk is seen as an infrared reflection nebula. We have modeled our near-infrared and previous optical po...
متن کاملORBITAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE β Pic INNER PLANET CANDIDATE WITH KECK ADAPTIVE OPTICS
A point source observed 8 AU in projection from β Pictoris in L′ (3.8μm) imaging in 2003 has been recently presented as a planet candidate. Here we show the results of L′-band adaptive optics imaging obtained at Keck Observatory in 2008. We do not detect β Pic b beyond a limiting radius of 0.29′′, or 5.5 AU in projection, from the star. If β Pic b is an orbiting planet, then it has moved ≥ 0.12...
متن کاملCollisional Cascades in Planetesimal Disks I. Stellar Flybys
We use a new multiannulus planetesimal accretion code to investigate the evolution of a planetesimal disk following a moderately close encounter with a passing star. The calculations include fragmentation, gas and Poynting-Robertson drag, and velocity evolution from dynamical friction and viscous stirring. We assume that the stellar encounter increases planetesimal velocities to the shattering ...
